Humphrey Bogart was an American screen actor whose performances in such iconic 1940s film noirs as The Maltese Falcon (1941), Casablanca (1942), and The Big Sleep (1946), earned him the legacy of cultural icon. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Bogart as the greatest male star in the history of American cinema. Over his career he received three Academy Award nominations for Best Actor, winning one for his portrayal of Charlie Allnut in The African Queen.
Bogart appeared in Slick Hare, a 1947 Merrie Melodies Bugs Bunny cartoon. It parodies the Mocambo nightclub in Los Angeles ("The Mocrumbo" in the cartoon). When Bogart comes to the Mocrumbo for dinner, waiter Elmer Fudd needs to serve fried rabbit in 20 minutes — or else. When looking in the kitchen, Elmer finds Bugs Bunny, but Bugs is more interested in having fun with the celebrities than being served for dinner.
In the 1950 Looney Tunes cartoon directed by Chuck Jones, 8 Ball Bunny, twice Bogart trods in and asks Bugs Bunny if he can "help out a fellow American who's down on his luck." Bugs flips him a quarter. At the end of the cartoon, Bugs and Playboy, the penguin, finally arrive at the South Pole. After Bugs realizes that Playboy is from Hoboken, NJ, he is about to go crazy when Bogart appears for the third time. Just as Bogart says "Say pardon me but...", Bugs asks him if "he can help out a fellow American who's down on his luck." With that, he thrusts Playboy into Bogart's hands and runs off into the distance while laughing hysterically.
